Kalamaki Information

The information on accommodation in Greece is provided as a guide to accommodation and Back To Work cannot accept responsibility for the suitability to individual requirements.

Some travellers may need to travel to Zakynthos via Athens International Airport if a direct flight is not available. Transferring to Zakynthos by internal flight from Athens is easiest and quickest.  Over land from Athens is a bus (coach) and ferry journey. This is mainly motorway and good roads, with a service stop. The bus journey is approx. 5 hours, with the ferry crossing to Zakynthos taking about 1 hour.

UK travellers may try Manos Holidays who have provided ourselves with good service for several years.

Eating out each evening (self-catering) can be easier and offers a better choice of food than cooking yourself or having half /full board in an hotel.

The temperature in Greece can be around 90 -100 deg.   Accommodation in Hotels, Studios, Apartments vary, with some having air-conditioning and others offering the hire of fans.  Most rooms have fairly basic facilities, few provide TV.

The Greeks generally keep the sun out of their rooms.  Close windows and shutters when the sun comes up and open them when it is going down. This keeps the heat of the sun and the hot air from entering your room during the day.

If your room has net curtains or mesh blinds, keep these closed to keep mosquitoes out.  Use the tablets on electric warmers, or burner the anti-mosquito coils every evening when you go out and when you go to bed

Enjoying turtles and conservation
We share the beach with the turtles, but they have been there for thousands of years.
  • You will not know if you are over a turtles nest.
  • There could be 100 eggs tightly together in one nest.
  • One thoughtless parasol can kill 100 turtles
  • It costs us nothing to live with the turtles and share the beach
  • Enjoy it without destroying it
  • Laganas beach is lost to the turtles, it is now too hard for them to dig.

Kalamaki bay has a shallow sloping beach and any restrictions for the protection of the Turtles should be respected.

Do not push poles (parasols, windbreaks etc) into the soft sand. Doing this is likely to alter the temperature in a turtles nest, destroying the eggs, even if the pole does not actually physically damage them.

Try not to disturb or frighten any turtle you see basking in the shallows. This is part of the process of preparing the temperature of the turtle before she comes up the beach to lay her eggs during the night.

Do not attempt to go on the beach, or shine lights on the beach after dusk.  A disturbed turtle will return to the sea without digging a nest and laying their eggs.  The eggs will then be shed in the sea and will never hatch.

Visit one of the turtle protection information centres for ways you can help the turtles.

You can adopt a turtle and be informed of information on any sightings.

We hope you enjoy Zakynthos and have the memorable experience of swimming quietly alongside turtles as we have.
